Shopping for hardwood flooring

Hardwood flooring: Just the phrase conjures up visions of classic elegance and warm, rich rooms. You can’t go wrong with wood floors; not only is it beautiful, but it lasts for decades and adds value to a property. It can be quite simple to shop for these floors, but there are a few things to think about ahead of time to make the process easier.

Solid or engineered hardwood?

At the top is a slice of oak, maple, hickory, or whatever your species of choice is. This gives the floor undertones, knots, swirls, and raised grains. Underneath, however, are at least three layers of genuine wood combined with a bit of resin and placed in a crosswise position. As a result, the floor can be installed in some higher-than-normal moisture places, such as basements, where solid isn’t recommended. It can be refinished repeatedly and adds the same value to a property as any other wood.

Hardwood species, color, and style

This is most likely the most enjoyable part. There are hundreds from which to choose, but the most popular domestics are oak (both red and white), maple; walnut; cherry; ash; and hickory. There are also exotic species coming from locales like Brazil, Indonesia, and Africa. They include species like teak, tigerwood, acacia, cumaru, and more. These tend to be extremely hard, dark, and dramatic, and, some say, more contemporary. Also, consider the color and type of stain you want. This would also be the time to decide if you want a wider or narrower plank.

Factory or onsite finish?

This is a big decision. Many prefer factory finish because they know what they’re getting and have samples in hand to start the coordination process immediately. They also don’t need to be concerned about dust or odors. Onsite, however, provides an incredible opportunity for customization. However, engineered wood flooring is almost always finished at the factory.
